Why Our Work Matters More Than Ever
The Power of Role Models in Shaping Girls’ Futures
Despite decades of progress toward gender equality, the reality is that too many girls still grow up believing that certain careers, leadership positions, and opportunities are not meant for them. The statistics are both powerful and concerning:
67% of young women aged 11–21 think women do not have the same opportunities as men.
46% of girls aged 11–16 say they do not have the confidence to become leaders.
30% of girls aged 11–16 believe STEM subjects are “just for boys.”
Less than 30% of the world’s researchers are women.
Only 27.1% of managers and leaders globally are women.
Yet, 70% of girls say they feel differently about their futures after hearing from female role models.
These figures highlight a challenge that extends far beyond education or career guidance. They reveal a confidence gap, an aspiration gap, and a visibility gap that continues to shape the choices girls make about their futures.
This is exactly why our work is so important.
The Challenge Girls Face
From a young age, girls absorb messages about what they can and cannot achieve. Whether through stereotypes, a lack of representation, or limited exposure to diverse career paths, many girls begin to narrow their ambitions long before they enter the workforce.
When girls do not see women leading companies, conducting scientific research, building technology, or shaping public policy, it becomes harder for them to imagine themselves in those roles.
Research from Inspiring Girls shows that girls overwhelmingly want and need female role models. Their mission is built on a simple but transformative idea: “If you can see it, you can be it.” By connecting girls with women from diverse professions and backgrounds, they help expand horizons, challenge stereotypes, and build confidence.
The Difference Role Models Make
The impact of role models is not theoretical, it is measurable.
According to Inspiring Girls International, 93% of girls feel more confident after hearing from female role models, while 70% feel differently about their future careers after engaging with the organisation’s programmes.
These outcomes align closely with the statistics shown above. If 46% of girls lack confidence in becoming leaders, then exposure to women who have already broken barriers can help close that gap. If 30% of girls believe STEM is only for boys, then meeting female engineers, scientists, technologists, and innovators can challenge that belief directly.
Role models provide something that textbooks and career brochures cannot: real-life proof that success is possible.
Our Impact So Far
The results demonstrate why this work must continue.
Since 2016, Inspiring Girls International has:
Reached more than 250,000 girls in person.
Connected them with over 25,000 female role models.
Built a presence across 40 countries worldwide.
Grown online communities of more than 100,000 people.
Reached 80 million people through awareness campaigns.
These numbers represent far more than participation statistics. Behind every figure is a girl who has discovered a new career path, gained confidence to pursue her ambitions, or realised that leadership is something she can aspire to.
Every conversation has the potential to change a life trajectory.
Why We Cannot Stop Now
While progress has been made, the statistics remind us that the work is far from finished.
Women remain underrepresented in leadership positions and research careers globally. Gender stereotypes continue to influence educational choices, particularly in STEM fields. Many girls still struggle with confidence at the exact age when they are beginning to make decisions that will shape their futures.
Without intervention, these patterns can continue from one generation to the next.
By continuing to connect girls with inspiring women, we help break that cycle. We create opportunities for girls to see possibilities they may never have considered. We help them develop confidence, resilience, ambition, and a sense of belonging in spaces where women have historically been underrepresented.
Looking Ahead
The need for visible female role models has never been greater. Every school visit, mentoring session, workshop, panel discussion, and conversation contributes to a future where girls are not limited by stereotypes but empowered by possibility.
When a girl meets a scientist who looks like her, a CEO who shares her background, or an engineer who once faced the same doubts she feels today, something changes. Her perception of what is possible expands.
And when that happens at scale, we do more than inspire individual girls: we help build a more equitable future for everyone.
That is why our work matters. That is why our impact is significant. And that is why we must continue.
Because every girl deserves to grow up knowing that her ambitions are valid, her voice matters, and her future has no limits.
